Radial Pressure Wave Therapy

(Shockwave Therapy)

What is radial pressure wave therapy?

Radial Pressure waves are acoustic waves that generate oscillations in the tissue. The wave hits the body at skin surface and from there travels radially into the body to a depth of around 5cm. When introduced into the tissue, shock waves and pressure waves have effects on a cellular level that are beneficial for healing. Increased blood flow and formation of new blood vessels create an improved environment for tissue repair. It has further been shown that application of shock waves influences the body’s pain regulating mechanisms resulting in local pain relief.

In the clinic we typically will use Radial Pressure Wave Therapy for chronic tendon injuries (tendinopathies) that aren’t responding to a typical loading program. We are seeing fantastic results with lower limb tendinopathies eg. Achilles, patella, gluteal, hamstring and plantar fascia injuries.

Clinical studies have also shown improvement of symptoms in the following conditions:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • Calcific tendinopathy
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Trigger points
  • Pain and inflammation management in Orthopaedic conditions
