North Waikato Physiotherapy offers a Hand Therapy service based in Huntly.
Hand therapy provides treatment and rehabilitation for all upper limb injuries and conditions including the elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, fingers, and thumb.
Common conditions treated by hand therapy include:
Sprains and strains through to assessment of possible ruptures (and onward referral if needed)
Dislocations
Mallet finger, skiers’ thumb, central slip (Boutonniere) injuries
Tendon, ligament, and nerve repairs
Dupuytrens – after surgery
After tendon ligament or nerve surgery
Fractures (after plaster or surgery) – minor chip fractures can often be treated like a sprain
Chronic pain problems, hypersensitivity
RSI/tendonitis problems, including De Quervains
Carpal tunnel syndrome

Crush injuries/ amputations

Hand therapy – How is it different to physiotherapy?
Hand therapists have complimentary knowledge of the upper limb and facilitate tissue healing through rest, and controlled movement.
Hand therapists can make custom splints for patients as required to facilitate the healing of tissue. We work closely with hand surgeons to ensure you have the best possible management and outcomes.
Various treatment modalities include:
Detailed assessment, education, and management advice
Control of acute oedema including compression bandages, neoprene wraps
Progressive exercise programmes
Splinting for protection/rest, restricted range or to gain range
Massage, soft tissue mobilisation and manual therapy
Scar management to soften and flatten hypertrophic scars
Sensory re-education following nerve damage
Treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS/RSD)
Ergonomic and function activity advice including provision of adaptive equipment and devices
Shockwave therapy
