What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical treatment developed for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders/injuries. The treatment utilizes set pressure waves from a handheld machine that are focused on the site of pain or injury. It stimulates the body’s natural metabolism, enhances circulation and accelerates the healing process. As a result, damaged tissues are allowed to regenerate and recover.
What conditions can Shockwave help with?
Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat many painful soft tissue injuries but is most commonly used to treat tendon injuries especially longstanding or chronic ones. Common tendon problems include:
- Achilles tendinopathy (tendinitis)
- Plantar fasciitis (heel spurs)
- Patella tendinopathy (jumpers knee)
- Hamstring tendinopathy
- Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
- Medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow)
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Other chronic tendon/soft tissue injuries
How long does treatment take?
A typical Shockwave treatment is approximately 5 – 10 minutes and can be performed in conjunction with physiotherapy treatment. Generally, 3-5 treatment sessions are necessary and are performed on a weekly interval. After Shockwave Therapy treatment some patients may experience immediate pain relief while for others it may take up to four weeks before significant relief is felt. Over 80 percent of patients treated report to be pain free and/or have significant pain reduction.
